  • A new contract has led the Milwaukee County Transit System’s bus drivers and mechanics to approve a future strike called by their union leaders, if need be. In fact, so many of the 750 workers are upset over the fact that they have been working without a contract since April 1, that over 96% of them voted in favor of a strike at the end of the month if no progress has been made.

In response to the overwhelming vote approving a strike, Milwaukee County Transit System spokesman Brendan Conway, shared that, “we’ve been negotiating a new contract since February. Drivers are a critical part of our operation. We’re optimistic we’ll reach an agreement.”

Since a lot of residents in Milwaukee rely on the transit system to get to and from their community and the city, Milwaukee movers hope to see the issue come to a resolution sometime soon, as the accessibility to public transit can have an effect on the rates of people moving to Milwaukee.

Since discussions with a federal mediator are scheduled for June 26, Transit System President James Macon stated that they would wait to see what happens at that meeting before making any plans to go ahead with a strike. Moreover, if they do decide to call a strike for all of their drivers and mechanics, then it would have detrimental effects for the city, especially because the first weekend of the “world’s largest music festival,” Summerfest, beings on June 27 and 28.

Last year, the Transit System was responsible for getting over 240,000 Summerfest attendees to the festival by means of special freeway routes and downtown shuttles. When asked if the strike would, in fact, be scheduled during the music festival if a new contract was not agreed upon, Mason declined to comment.

If you are moving to Milwaukee this month, be conscious that there may be a shortage of public transportation towards the beginning of July, and use other forms of travel.

Once a popular venue in Memphis, Temptations Nightclub recently celebrated its 30th anniversary this past weekend. While Temptations only had a seven-year run that ended in 1992, the impact it made on the community proved to be a lasting one. Being around for over 20 years, Memphis moving company All My Sons Moving & Storage knew of Temptations’ popularity all too well.

Owner Mike Garibaldi, mainly known for his popular Memphis restaurant chain Garibaldi’s Pizza, states that this was his only venture into the nightclub world. Despite the restaurant closing more than two decades ago, it still remains a legend amongst locals.

According to Garibaldi, the club started as “a place as an extension for the restaurant for folks when they came home. It was so they didn’t leave and go somewhere else because they couldn’t get a beverage.” It was the perfect spot for newcomers to feel welcomed and acquainted after moving to Memphis; however, over time it evolved into so much more.

In particular, one employee was responsible for turning the club into the legend that it was – a woman by the name of Dora Wagner, a waitress who had worked in 1960s and 1970s era nightclubs. Upon first meeting her, Garibaldi recalls that, “one day this middle-aged lady comes in walking in with her little bouffant hairdo.”

Despite her older age compared to the Temptations demographic, Wagner immediately became a crowd favorite amongst club regulars. According to Garibaldi, during her interview she told him that, “I want to bring my customers some place where I’m comfortable. I’m not looking for a job. I’m looking for a home.”

The famed club featured dance contests, a lip-syncing stage show, and themed music nights. While the club ultimately ended up closing its doors, it had a long run compared to the average lifespan of a nightclub.

The annual Secret City Festival just outside Knoxville, Tennessee, expects to see headliners like the Marshall Tucker Band and Three Dog Night gracing the stage this year. With such huge headliners will also come huge crowds– thousands, in fact.

Mayor Warren Gooch proclaimed that, “the Secret City Festival is an exciting two days for our city. We always look forward to it because it provides entertainment, festivities and activities for every one of every age. It gives us an opportunity to showcase our city and extend Oak Ridge hospitality to all of our visitors.” In agreement with Gooch, Knoxville moving companies are sure that the Secret City Festival is an appealing event for those who are not only looking to visit, but also for those who may be looking to move to Knoxville in the near future.

The locals have responded with excited anticipation for the upcoming event, as evidenced by the fact that the amount of advance ticket sales have far exceeded ticket sales for past festivals. Aside from multiple concerts every night, the Secret City Festival does not just offer musical performances, they also have everything from historical displays, an arts and crafts fair, and a car show.

Gooch expressed his excitement by stating that, “it’s jam-packed this year in terms of all the different activities.” The future attendees continue to show the most excitement for the Battle of Normandy, with World War II re-enactors. However, that may stand to change after they see how many new, fun additions have been added to the venue this year.

The festival is on its 13th year and continues to celebrate the city’s rich history and traditions. With the way things are heading, it looks like your local Knoxville movers and the rest of the community will continue to frequent the event for many years to come.

The distressed Parkville settlement problem that the city has been dealing with for many years looks like it may take some more time to find a solution. Kansas City movers agree that the backfill problem surrounding the inlet in Parkville is an issue, and many residents in the surrounding area want to see a resolution reached, so that more people will find Parkville attractive to move to, even businesses. However, every attempt so far has only cost residents a substantial amount of money.

A recent study done by Olsson Associates, an engineering and design firm, revealed that the city should monitor the problem in lieu of spending more money, which would ultimately result in finding an even more expensive solution.

One geotechnical engineer at the firm stated that the area of distress is, “a compaction of backfill around the inlet where a storm water drains into.”

While it is not a clearly defined solution for the problem, it is estimated that attempting to once again tackle the problem would cost about $25,000 to $50,000 – while merely monitoring the problem costs the city nothing extra. The city has made plans to take the advice of the firm and to not make any plans to address the area of distress in Parkville. However, in the off-chance that the city does decide to take on the problem, the study reaffirms that, “it is possible that the last repair attempt created a suitable bridge over the distressed area.”

Mayor Nan Johnston of the city, agreed with the results of the study, and stated that because the settlement issue, “appears to be stable, we voted to continue to monitor it.”

The area has long since provided issues for the city, which all for the most part ended up being unsuccessful and merely costing the Kansas City community an excessive amount of money, deterring new residents from moving to Parkville.

This past weekend, a Summer Food Program geared towards giving free healthy lunches to children younger than 18 in the Jacksonville area was launched at Philip Randolph Heritage Park.

In fact, Joey Heymann, executive director of the Jacksonville Children’s Commission, went to the Jacksonville City Hall in an effort to request $500,000 in funding for the commission’s summer camp program, which has recently faced budget cuts by the city.

At the park, the program not only gave over 300 Jacksonville youth free meals, it also allowed them the opportunity to explore the one of the city’s firetrucks, dance to music from a DJ, and meet Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. This is not the first time the organization has had an event like this. In fact, this is the 21st year they have been helping give healthy lunches to youth in Jacksonville, and this past weekend marks over 438,000 meals served.

This year notably distinguishes itself from previous years. Instead of food only being available at one location, this year multiple venues have offered up their shop as a place where kids can find meals this summer while school is out. Specifically, over 200 Jacksonville churches, apartment complexes, libraries, schools and day-care centers will have food available until August 7th.

The Summer Food Service program comes in the wake of a huge population of kids not being able to receive their normal free breakfasts and lunches at school due to summer break.

According to Rev. Lee Harris, chairman of the commission’s board, “when school is out, that’s when a lot of children go hungry.”

This year, your local Jacksonville movers are happy to see that so many local children are receiving free meals. If you are new to the Jacksonville area and your child was receiving free meals at school and still needs meal assistance during the summer, check out the Jacksonville Children’s Commission website.

Begin decorating your home with these easy-to-follow tips from West Palm movers on how to hang a picture properly. Correctly hanging items in your new house will save you time and frustration, and keep you from constantly having to readjust them.

    1. West Palm Beach movers suggest that you take the time to make a plan for how and where you plan on arranging items on your walls.
    2. If you are planning on hanging more than one item on a wall, think about how the pieces will fit together.
    3. Use the proper hardware. If it is anything that West Palm moving companies know, it’s that a single nail doesn’t always do the trick. Choose anchors and screws that are meant to support the weight of the item you are trying to hang.
    4. Find and mark the center of the wall, by measuring the width of the wall with a measuring tape and dividing it by two.
    5. Decide on the height you’d like your picture to hang at – a general rule of thumb that local full service movers use: it should ultimately be eye level for the average adult. Once you have decided the height of you picture, mark the wall where the top center of the picture frame meets the center of the wall.
    6. Measure the distance between the top of your picture and where the wire or hook is.
    7. Go back to your wall and from the mark you made where the top of your frame will be measure down along the center of the wall the distance you just calculated for the space between the top of the frame and the wire or hook. Place an ‘X’ at this spot.
    8. Hammer or drill your nail or screw into the ‘X’ using a folded posted note under the hole to catch the dust from the dry wall.
    9. Hang your picture and use a level to make sure it is balanced.

Local movers are getting their moving trucks ready for the influx of new residents that are expected to move to Birmingham once the construction of a new downtown office complex is completed. What is predicted to be the tallest skyscraper that the city has ever seen, plans were recently submitted to build a 346 foot office block at 103 Colmore Row. This would mean the demolition of the NatWest Tower, and the construction of a completely new tower.

Currently on the desk awaiting approval by Birmingham City Council, Sterling Property Ventures and Rockspring were the developers who constructed the plan to tear down the 1970s building that has been vacant since 2003.

Since the current office tower does not do much for the city as is, Birmingham moving companies and residents alike, are hoping that the construction of the new office tower will draw more residents to the downtown area and make the city more appealing for business.

However, managing director of Sterling Property Ventures James Howarth, explains that their goal is not to appeal only to large business, but rather, “We are keen it becomes a destination for the people of Birmingham. The winter garden and skyline restaurant mean it will be accessible to all.”

Eric Linden, European director at Rockspring, said: “It’s our first investment in Birmingham and we are really proud of it. It is an elegant, modern building, symbolic of the city’s ongoing regeneration.”

If Birmingham City Council passes the proposal, the tallest office tower / skyscraper is said to be completed by 2018.
