If you are moving to Georgia, you will be joining one of the country’s greatest men, who loved the state as his retreat and second home. Throughout history, United States presidents have had their own, personal destinations for when they need to get away for a while and escape being the most powerful man in the world for a day or two. In 1920, Roosevelt had run for vice president and lost. In 1921, he was diagnosed with polio. After hearing about a polio patient who benefited from swimming in the springs of Warm Springs, GA, he started vacationing there. It wasn’t long before Roosevelt fell in love with Warm Springs and continued to visit and swim in the springs throughout his entire presidency, even when Pearl Harbor happened; he called his sanctuary the Little White House.

In 1927, Roosevelt bought a 2,000 acre resort in the springs and turned it into a polio treatment center, not only for himself, but also for other polio patients.

Earlier this month, the Gonzales City Council gave the green light to a rezoning request that would transform a former cattle ranch on La. 44 into a mixed-use community.

If you are moving to Baton Rouge this year, and are considering relocating to Gonzales, you may want to look into the new zone once it is completed.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission urged the city council to approve the project request submitted by Southern Lifestyle Development. The rezoning would include 106 acres for a neighborhood complete with residences and retail shops. There will be an additional 204 acres of residencies, with lots of 6,000 square feet.

“This is a wonderful development. I’m proud to see it be a part of the city of Gonzales,” Councilman Kenny Matassa said of the plans for the new community.

The new community cost Prescott Bailey, area president for Southern Lifestyle Development, $8 million; purchased from the heirs of Merritt P. Evans who used to own the land.

If you are checking out real estate in the area, the community will be called Conway Plantation, but there is no released start and completion date as of yet.

Uber has exploded in West Palm. Residents use the service to travel to the airport, after a night of drinking, or when they are having car troubles. Its convenience is hard to beat. As you have probably heard, there is a lot of controversy surrounding Uber, the ride-sharing app. If you are new to town and eager to use the service but worried about its legality, your West Palm packing and moving company has some good news: Uber and Palm Beach County have made a temporary deal that will allow the service to operate uninterrupted through September.

The deal required Uber to follow several guidelines in order to continue its operation:

• More thorough criminal background and driver history checks
• Insurance coverage for drivers
• Safety requirements for cars
• $15,000 paid to the county to ensure administration and enforcement of the deal

The deal struck between the company and the county is, of course, hotly contested. Ubers and its customers argue that Uber does not provide vehicle-for-hire services, but instead is a ride-scheduling app. Uber says it doesn’t own any of the cars or employ its drivers the way a taxi service does. Opponents, on the other hand, argue that Uber is in fact a vehicle-for-hire company and should be subject to the same rules as taxi and limo companies. Uber is not forced to comply with the same rules, like:

• A $10,000 application fee, $225 annual company fee, and $100 per vehicle annual fee
• Higher minimum insurance requirements for drivers
• A local office to handle customer satisfaction
• Drivers to be at least 21 years old, have a county-issued picture ID badge and adhere to a dress code

Unfortunately, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced job and program cuts that will be taken into effect within the next two years. In lieu of looming budget cuts throughout the state of Wisconsin, about 400 positions will be directly affected, along with several campus programs.

The drastic cuts will have a devastating effect on the multiple aspects of the school – in total, the number of class seats will drop by almost 9,000. In addition to that staggering number, about 320 classes in the curriculum offered and 92 staff positions in the College of Letters and Science will disappear from the school’s campus.

According to the university’s dean, Karl Scholz, “the strategy is to not replace existing vacancies, I’m trying to do everything I can to mitigate and ideally avoid layoffs.”

Some other schools within the college that will be affected include the information, technology, agriculture and the arts departments – they will most likely be facing potential closures or mergers. Unfortunately, this may mean that class sizes will become bigger, there will be less variety in the amount and types of courses offered, and a smaller amount of undergraduate advisors will be available to underclassmen.

However, Senator Alberta Darling eases the blow of the announcement that reassuring the Wisconsin community that a majority of the 400 positions that will be cut are already vacant.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank also remains hopeful, as evidenced by her most recent statement: “I recognize that this process will impact good people and limit our ability to serve students and the state. The university has weathered many challenges over the past two centuries,” Blank said. “The strength of our mission, and the quality of our students, faculty and staff, set us apart and will carry us through.”

Storms that have been scouring the city of Knoxville have left behind huge amounts of damage in recent days.

The most affected was Madisonville, as building official Tony Wilson states that, “it’s very unsafe right now.”

Some of the damage included several trees being uprooted – not only were power lines knocked down, but one tree ended up smashing a shed into pieces, one tree destroyed a fence on its way down, and one tree even fell just a few feet from one Knoxville resident’s home. One resident recalls seeing the canopy of a convenience store totally collapse to the ground, while a major billboard unfortunately had a huge chunk ripped off of it.

According to Wilson, he avoided some of the damage because, “my car wasn’t being thrown from side to side so it’s amazing the wind must have just caught this just right.” A crew member out on the job to help clean up some of the damage, Jean Kirkland, recalls his thoughts while the storm was going on. He remembers thinking “boy, I can’t believe that the whole big roof that wind had to be so powerful that it just picked that up.”

One home in Knoxville was unfortunately not as lucky as some of the other homes that evaded damage – on Westwood Lane a tree was completely uprooted and crashed right through the roof of a house. While everyone in the home at the time of the incident is safe, they will have to use local Knoxville movers when packing and moving whatever belongings they can salvage, while they stay at a temporary location while waiting for their home to be repaired.

Recently, architecture students from the University of Kansas used their skills for an interesting cause – to turn a camping vehicle into a classroom on wheels named the KU Mobile Collaboratory.

Inside the mobile classroom, there are storage carts that can be pulled out and unfolded into tables, as well as benches that double as storage and countertops that can also be folded up for additional space, or folded down to hold displays.

One of the students responsible for renovating the camping vehicle, Jessica Luber, shares that “I’m most proud that it can be used for anything and not just exhibits.” Last year, when this class project began, she recalls what bad of shape the airstream was in. It was in such poor condition that when the students began delving into the vehicle, live mice fell out of the ceiling.

They are gearing up to actually put their project to good use so that others can benefit from it. The University Of Kansas School Of Architecture is currently creating guidelines for borrowing the mobile classroom, so that their faculty can utilize it around the state for public projects.

According to Robert Castillo, a doctoral architecture student who got a sneak peek inside the classroom on wheels while it was still being worked on, attests to the success of the project.

He stated that, “it turned out great, the outside still looks like an Airstream, so it’s kind of a surprise when you get inside.”

Serving as a panelist during “Spotlight on Innovation: Health Care” – a discussion organized by the law firm Gray Robinson, about technological innovations in health care in Jacksonville, University of Florida doctoral student Ed Buckley (set to complete his doctorate in health behavior) was looking for venture capital to support peerFit, his second health technology company. In addition to peerFit, he also founded Wellness2Go in 2007, a company that rewards people who engage in healthy activities.

While not much money was raised during One Spark 2013, Buckley made a contact that ultimately led to him receiving financial backing from Florida Blue’s Healthbox initiative, along with funding from Florida Blue and from the Florida Institute for Commercialization of Public Research. From that funding, Buckley, along with a group of UF graduates and students, launched peerFit – which gives members access to more than 100 boutique fitness studios in Florida, including about 25 studios in Jacksonville. As a matter of fact, insurance companies such as Florida Blue, have begun to recognize that finding innovative approaches to disease prevention may, in fact, be worth funding.

One of the main messages presented throughout the entire discussion and movement, is that technology will be necessary in order to advance health care and the way that doctors obtain information. Buckley wears a FitBit on his wrist that is able to track his activity; such as: steps taken each day, food intake, weight gains and sleep patterns. For iphone users, Apple has started an app that does essentially the same thing – tracks the number of steps taken along with various health indicators.
