  • Earlier this month, former Mayor Jim Sells listed the historic town of Grantville for sale on eBay, and he had no idea that his listing would receive the volume of attention it got.

“The phone is ringing off the hook and we’re enjoying it,” says Sells, who listed Grantville at a mere $680,000.

The small historic town has but just nine buildings, which include: a hair salon, a church, a pharmacy, and empty retail spaces.

Bought by Sells out of foreclosure during the 2008 recession, he explains how Grantville residents want to see the downtown space redeveloped again and brought back to life, a vision which is not far off.

Although it may seem like an old abandoned town as of present, Grantville has been a recent hot spot for movie and television producers alike; with one of the most popular The Walking Dead episodes, “The Clear”, being filmed there.

Patti Palmer, Downtown Development Authority Chair, stated that she wants whoever buys the property to maintain its small town charm.

“I would love to see a lot of independent businesses come in,” said Palmer. “Whether it’s a restaurant or a store that creates a heartbeat for downtown. I think that would be… I think that would set the whole thing on a great path.”

If you are new to Georgia, Peachtree City movers suggest that you take your family to see the remnants of The Walking Dead episode, through one of Sells’ tours, every day at 2 p.m.

In an effort to keep costs down, United Airlines plans to layoff about 66 employees from Jacksonville International Airport. A spokeswoman, Luke Punzenberger, said that this was not an easy decision for the company – but it is a necessary one.

Punzenberger contested that, “this is to ensure our costs are competitive. A lot of our competitors have workforce agreements in these markets that allow them to operate at a more competitive rate than United. This change will enable us to be more cost competitive in markets like Jacksonville.”

The positions most affected include those below and above the wing; such as: baggage handlers, ramp workers, and customer service representatives. Most of the workers facing layoffs have already been made aware, and if eligible, have the option to relocate to another airport in another position.

While the reported layoffs are effective May 17-31, the airline has yet to even respond to the many questions concerning the airline layoffs. The most information they released was in January, when they announced that they were considering cutting up to 2,000 jobs at 28 airports – including Jacksonville International Airport – and planned to outsource the work to various contractors.

The move comes after United’s decision over a year ago, to outsource 600 plus jobs to 12 airports throughout the country. The incident last year mostly affected airports fulfilled by smaller United Express regional flights.

As of late, United was discussing the layoff situation with representatives of the affected workers, the International Association of Machinists, and Aerospace Workers.

If you are moving to Jacksonville and will be traveling by plane, the layoffs should not affect your flights and the prices should remain low as a result.

An expansive 9,000 home community named Prosper, is in the planning stages of construction on over 5,100 acres of farmland. The project will cost an estimated $600 million and will add on to the 12,000 home Sterling Ranch and 10,000 home Green Valley Ranch East. In total, there are more than 31,000 home lots in the residential pipeline.

The communities will be built on the principle of walkability, connectivity and community.

According to one Eaton resident, “I don’t like it, but I don’t think there’s a lot I can do about it now. I don’t think anyone out here likes it – but money talks.”

Eaton is currently shielded from the noise, traffic, and urban density by tracts of open land. Most of the current residents moved to Eaton for that very reason – to get out of the city.

However, because of the economic stance of the past few years, the Denver housing market finds itself with record low home inventories, skyrocketing rents, rising housing prices, and Denver movers feeling the impact as well.

According to Brad Calvert, Metro Vision manager for the Denver Regional Council of Governments, “we’ve been in a major slowdown for the last five years, so it looks pretty good right now. There’s tons of pent-up demand.”

Demand has risen so much, that the average time on the market has fallen from 108 days in 2011 to 45 days just this past February.

Not only that, but the median home price has increased to $286,500, while the median value of a home nationwide is $178,500.

8002889079_a6bd6120d2_zPompano Beach located just minutes away from Miami and Ft Lauderdale is a relative newcomer to Florida’s cities. First settled in 1896 the land the city resides on was given as a gift by Frank Sheene. Legend has it that the city got it’s name from Sheene’s survey of the area, in which he wrote the name of a variety of local fish he dined on. The arrival of rail service led to fast growth, and the city was incorporated in 1908 as the Town of Pompano. With the boom in tourism during the 1920’s many permanent and seasonal residents moved to the area.

Today Pompano Beach is rated as one of the best real estate markets in Florida. The city has continued to grow and as of 2012 it’s population has grown to over 100,000. The population is quite diverse, with large numbers of Italian and Cuban Americans. The city has the largest Haitian population in the country. One very important component of the city’s growth are the so called ‘Snow-Birds’ from Northern climes who winter in Florida.

In order to boost and revitalize the downtown area the city has begun to offer many free and discounted activities. The Limelight Street Festival is one of the highlights. On the last Wednesday of every month, free food, wine and music are available downtown on 1st Street. This month the theme will be “Fish And Chicks” featuring local female artists and musicians. Every Friday evening one local business is selected to host Happy Hour At The Beach on East Atlantic Blvd, offering free food, and samples of their wares. The last of Friday of each month offers Movies Under The Stars On The Great Lawn At The Beach. Free family friendly movies are available, this month’s offering is Toy Story 3.

Pompano Beach is a great diverse city with plenty to do and see. If you’re thinking of moving to the city that the Goodyear Blimp Spirit Of Innovation calls home, contact your friends in the moving business All My Sons Moving & Storage.

According to recent information released by the U.S. Census Bureau, about half of all Wisconsin counties declined in population from 2013 to 2014.

In total, about 35 counties dwindled in size – with Manitowoc County suffering the biggest population loss, coming into the New Year with 463 less people. Coming in second place was Wood County, declining by 336 people, with third place being awarded to Adams County with a 289 person loss in population.

However, at rate of losing 1.4% of its population, Adams County decreased in size at the fastest rate. On the other hand, Eau Claire County, with a population of 101,564, came in at the largest county in Wisconsin that lost the largest amount of people – 140 people.

Luckily, not all of the populations in Wisconsin declined – there were plenty of counties that actually grew in size. For instance, Menominee County grew at an accelerated rate of 3.2%, which resulted in an overall increase in population of 4,522 people.

On average, only about one third of the individual counties within the state saw people packing and moving into the county as opposed to out of it.

In total, the state of Wisconsin saw a .25% population increase, with an influx of 14,611 people flocking to the state. Subsequently, the state has had 68,296 people added to the total population since 2010, with the Milwaukee metropolitan area ranking at the 39th highest amount of residents in 2014, with a total of 1,572,245 people.

This past Wednesday, Superintendent Jim McIntyre presented a proposal for the 2015-16 budget for the fiscal year, leaving many with additional questions.

In the proposal, the superintendent suggested increasing the school’s overall budget from $424.9 million to $440.7 million – a 3.7 percent increase. The main focus of the increased education budget? Increasing teachers’ pay by 4%.

Currently, the average pay for a Knoxville teacher is $45,998 and while teachers earn their bonuses throughout the school year, they don’t receive the full amount until fall – explaining why the bonuses are incorporated into the following year’s budget. In total, it would cost about $10 million to make the proposed increase happen, with the state contributing about $4.3 million.

Throughout the budget meeting, board members went back and forth on why giving teachers raises and bonuses would benefit the overall community.

According to board member Amber Rountree, “I support a raise for our teachers, but what I’ve heard continually…is I think teachers would rather see across the board versus merit pay.”

School board member Karen Carson also showed her support for increasing teacher pay, by stating that, “we can decide to do this bonus one more year with the understanding that it ends this year, so about half the teachers will get a one-time bonus or we can apply the 4 percent raise across the board that we’re trying to do.”

However, the proposed budget increase for education comes at the cost of getting rid of APEX, the district’s strategic compensation program. This caused a couple of board members to raise questions of concern – largely because many of the teachers had been working with the understanding that bonus dollars would be available throughout the course of their work.

25-year-old Thomas Chastain of Rockdale County, Atlanta, says that he was out of work and could not find a job, and that he feels the pain of the locally unemployed and wants to help.

“It was very hard for me,” Chastain said. “I went back to having to live with my parents and it was an all-around difficult task.”

The husband and father of one was struggling to find a job, but once he found work, he felt as if he should help to make it easier for others who are looking for work in Atlanta as well, stating that, “I’ve known friends, family, co-workers, teachers at my school even that were unemployed, and when they were unemployed I got to watch them struggle.”

Georgia currently has an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent, and Rockdale County, where Chastain is from, has a 7.9 percent unemployment rate – the highest in Atlanta.

In an effort to decrease the rate of unemployment in the area, Chastain called upon local employers to take part in a job fair, to occur every Wednesday, so that unemployed residents can come and see who is hiring, and local employers can meet potential candidates to fill their positions.

If you have recently moved to Atlanta and are struggling to find a job, Rockdale moving companies encourage you to attend Chastain’s grassroot job event, any Wednesday.
