  • Major Denver companies are ditching the suburbs and moving downtown due to the presence of millennials. The operation to make downtown Denver more appealing to millennials by creating more walkable areas and urban-centric places is making the companies flock as well. At least, a new study indicates that this is so.

The study is from Smart Growth America and is called “Core Values: Why American Companies are Moving Downtown.” It reports that hundreds of American companies are moving to downtown Denver to be closer to the fresh minds of millennials and downtown neighborhoods.

“Some of today’s most innovative companies are part of this emerging trend, choosing to move to, invest in, or expand in America’s walkable, urban downtowns,” the report says. “These companies clearly see a competitive advantage to locating in neighborhoods with a mix of offices, restaurants and shops, with a variety of housing options close by and accessible by a range of transportation choices.”

Of the 500 companies and hundreds of staff members that were surveyed, many explained that the advantages to moving their business out of the suburbs and into downtown Denver, include the following:

    • Being close to the availability of talented workers
    • Being able to attract workers
    • Creative collaboration
    • The ability to be closer to their partners

Denver moving companies like All My Sons Moving & Storage are excited to move more companies downtown and hope that the millennials will flock there as well.

LifeinCbus is a Columbus campaign that focuses on life in Columbus, why people should move there and what Columbus has to offer. Now, LifeinCbus has a new campaign running in D.C. where their ads can be found in D.C. Metro stations, encouraging millennials to move to Columbus.

Although Columbus movers are proud of their city and appreciate the business that LifeinCbus ads could generate, there is a lot of skepticism over how this can negatively affect D.C. The ads boast that Columbus has a lower cost of living and is therefore more affordable for people to live. LifeinCbus’ target audience is young professionals, particularly between the ages of 25 and 35, also known as millennials. Why is this their target? Because millennials are the age group that are more likely to move sometime soon, and when they consider moving, LifeinCbus wants them to move to Columbus. Millennials are also the future, so a city that has a lot of millennials into the area is more likely to flourish in the long run.

The median millennial earning in D.C. is roughly $54,000 and in Columbus it is $36,000. Although a millennial could earn more money in D.C. the high cost of living is what hurts them. Since the median rent in D.C. is $2,000 and only $670 in Columbus, after rent, a millennial living in Columbus would have $5,000 more in disposable income annually. However, the only way that moving to Columbus from D.C. would benefit a millennial, is if they make below the median income, since most D.C. residents have roommates to split rent and no car in the city that they pay for.

Regardless of whether a D.C. resident is living at or above the median income or not, homes in Columbus cost nearly one-third that of D.C. Furthermore, childcare costs are 75% less in Columbus, making Columbus the perfect city to move to anyways.

When it comes to moving, there are a couple secrets that you should know for the 2015 moving season and new resident of Connecticut, Christina Leoni, learned one moving secret the hard way.

July is the peak-moving month, as it is the very last month that families can scramble to try and get their move completed before their children have to go back to school. As a result, not only are Birmingham moving companies bombarded with moves, but so are the rest of the movers across the nation. On top of that, most homeowners do not do their research before hiring a local moving company. The end result, the homeowner hires the moving company that offers the best price, their move is completed (with the moving company most likely inflating the original quote), and there commonly is damage to furniture or lost items, which is exactly what Leoni learned.

Once Leoni’s move was completed, she realized that she was missing very personal belongings. Leoni paid one moving company $4,000 to complete her long distance, intrastate move. They moved Leoni’s entire life, and they stole a piece of it as well. According to Leoni, during her move she lost an old cedar chest that held generations of family history, photos, and awards.

Birmingham movers, The Better Business Bureau and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration urge homeowners who are moving to make a list of all of your belongings and make sure that each item arrives at your destination. Have the moving company that you hire sign off on the list before your move, so that they know that your list matches theirs and vice versa, and then all items should be accounted for. If your mover knows that you are knowledgeable about the moving process and are fully capable of holding them responsible, they will be more willing to make sure they do a good job.

However, there is one secret piece of advice that Leoni took from her unfortunate moving experience; take your personal belongings with you. The only true way to make sure that the items you cherish most are not lost or stolen is by having them in your possession.

If you are moving to Birmingham, don’t fall victim to fraudulent moving companies. All My Sons Moving & Storage has been moving families like yours for over 20 years. Our professionally trained moving crew will handle your move as if it was our own family, from our family to yours.

Are you moving to Atlanta and have a passion for reading, writing, poems, and even storytelling? The number one thing that Atlanta movers tell new residents about the city is that there truly is something to do for everyone – even storytelling enthusiasts. Since moving to a new city can seem overwhelming, local movers have come up with a list of the top three social hangouts in Atlanta for storytellers, or anyone who is looking to meet fellow literature enthusiasts.

    1. LIT- Known as the place in Atlanta for “books, booze, and beats,” on the last Thursday of every month you can find LIT in the Old Fourth Ward behind Pizzeria Vesuvius. This Edgewood Speakeasy features 10 readers that must read a selection according to that month’s particular theme. If you just moved to Atlanta and are interested in reading at the next gathering, be sure to jump on reserving a slot as they fill up quickly. There is no entrance fee, but attendees are encouraged to bring a book to donate.
    2. 10 Days Before - Every two weeks, events for 10 Days Before, a writers’ group, take place throughout Atlanta. You can RSVP for these events via their com page, as well as attend critiquing sessions every other Thursday for the opportunity to have your work analyzed by others.
    3. Atlanta Screenwriters Anonymous- Moving to Atlanta and are a huge movie fanatic? Do you love to write your own screenplays? Atlanta Screenwriters Anonymous, founded in 1998, is the perfect social gathering to network yourself and learn more about the screenwriting process.

A two-day, non-profit music and arts festival in downtown Tulsa, the Center of the Universe Festival features more than 100 bands throughout numerous outdoor stages and club venues. Aside from fantastic live music, you will also be able to enjoy a local street market, rows of food trucks, and the countless amounts of bars that line the street of the festival.

The event has grown to be such a staple of the city throughout the past couple of years that Tulsa movers recommend that one of the first things that new residents should do is to check out the annual Center of the Universe Festival. The best part about the festival? It is completely non-profit, so all of the proceeds from the tickets will go back towards the city. A portion of the festival proceeds goes towards the Tulsa Public Schools’ music program and to the trolly service.

Even co-founders Phil Kaiser and Chris Lieberman are volunteers. Lieberman shares that “unless it’s a production crew, everybody is a volunteer. Phil and I, all 30 people who work on this year-round, they’re all volunteers. We’re volunteering to do this because we know it’s important to Tulsa’s music scene.” Performers include Panic! At the Disco, Three Days Grace, American Authors, Kongos, Minus the Bear and Misterwives.

Needless to say, the Center of the Universe Festival is the perfect activity to take your whole family to once your local Tulsa movers have finished moving you and your whole family into your new home.

Earlier this month, an announcement was made to add a new warehouse distribution center south of Livingston. The passing development was the third project for the parish, reaching a capital investment of $110 million. The three projects are also predicted to create over 850 jobs, which Baton Rouge movers are excited to see if the growth causes more people to move to Livingston Parish.

Those numbers represent “one hell of an impact for a community of this size,” Michael Olivier, CEO of the Louisiana Committee of 100 for Economic Development, said Thursday during a monthly meeting of the Livingston Economic Development Council.

Despite the job growth and the positives that come to any city that is expanding rapidly, there are also cons. According to local residents and Olivier, Livingston Parish is expanding developments at such a fast rate that the city’s infrastructure may not be able to support it. However, the parish is not the only one in the state that faces this same problem. The entire state of Louisiana suffers from budget problems that are constantly being solved through reforming taxes and spending, placing a burden on residents.

Although Baton Rouge moving companies are always thrilled to move families to Livingston Parish, movers and locals alike hope that the job and economic growth is not diminished by tax reform.
