Jefferson further mentions that her administration receives thousands of complaints against moving companies each year; 3,000 in 2014 alone. The biggest complaint they receive is that a moving company jacked up the price last minute, and the latest scandal in the quest for demanding more money for moving your belongings, is by not giving you your belongings until you pay – what is now being called “hostage load”.

In lieu of all of the issues surrounding moving companies, federal and state regulators are offering tips to keep home owners safe:

• Hire a mover based off of recommendations
• Don’t ever hire a moving company that can’t provide a licensing information
• Never settle for a quote over the phone or from online
• Get multiple estimates and pay close attention to which estimate includes the most services
• Avoid any company that says you have to pay a deposit.

The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee says that the state will have the money next year to fund Louisiana State University’s medical schools. Since many young adults move to and from Baton Rouge to attend LSU, local movers are excited at what the additional money to the university and medical school means for new students. In addition to the extra funds that LSU will be receiving, the state also found the money to open a new charity hospital in New Orleans and aid other programs that have been hanging by a thread with the Finance Committee until budgets were negotiated. ‘

Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City has recently undergone a long overdue makeover with the creation of new art work that doubles as a flood barrier. Patricia Johnson, world-renowned environmental artist, helped design the “Echo Canyon” along the Parleys Trail. The most recent design was created after “The Witches” spires along the Mormon Trail, which is just one of the many landmarks that will be recreated within Sugar House Park. If you are moving to Salt Lake City, you can expect to see some changes within the city and a heightened protection from flooding in the area.

Coincidentally, the art project also doubles as an incredibly durable flood barrier for the floodwater that comes from the pond at Sugar House Park. Another structure will act as a flood barrier for Parleys Creek, which, when finished, will make the Sugar Hill structures the only public art in the nation that also serves as a way of managing floods.

A fantastic way to incorporate Salt Lake City’s history into a practical means of controlling flood waters within the city, locals like Stephen Goldsmith, University of Utah associate professor of planning and former Salt Lake City planning director, applauding the design. Goldsmith praised the project by stating that “any time we can integrate art that speaks to a place – tell a story – and build upon otherwise banal infrastructure, everybody wins.”

In an effort to get rid of any road disruptions this summer, the Department of Public Works will begin the High Impact Paving Program in Milwaukee this summer. The program ultimately completes short-term and quick pavement of major city highways. Most of the projects are completed within two to four days, while typical projects can take a couple of months. Milwaukee movers want anyone who is moving to Milwaukee to be careful of the road closures while paving is going on; watch for detours.

This summer, the three-year-old program will focus on repaving 27 segments throughout the city, totaling 21 miles of road. It has grown from using $1 million to repave 3.6 miles in 2013, to using $7 million to repave 21 miles of road. However, the projects are only improving the roadways and not the curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The repavement is only meant to be short-term as well, lasting up to 10 years, while traditional projects would last decades.

While the High Impact Paving Program only lasts up to up to ten years, it costs a third of what a more long-term repavement costs.

According to Department of Public Works Commissioner Ghassan Korban, “the focus is on getting more miles out of the same amount of funding.”

Considering that the roads getting repaving from the program this summer would eventually have updates and improvements done, the cost would equal out to less than or equal to a full-scale update. This in turn, offers a great solution between cities that need road improvement, but might not necessarily have the finding or time to do so. While Milwaukee movers are happy to see roads being repaved, the option of spending the same amount of money for longer-lasting effects is what should be considered.

This past week, the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority reached an operating agreement with a popular ride-sharing service, and revised an incentive program geared towards gaining more flight destinations out of the airport.

In total, the $1 million incentive program will make subsidies available to those airlines that offer flights to at least 21 locations, start to offer flights to a new international destination, or begin to offer a new service to a top 30 destination location that currently does not have flights going to it out of Memphis-Shelby County Airport.

Before this new program was created, the total amount of incentives were ultimately determined by the size of the aircraft. For example, an airline that has airplanes with a large number of seats, would receive more incentives than an airline with a plane that had a smaller number of seats. However, according to the airport, the only airline to take advantage of the incentive program was Southwest Airlines.

Airport Authority President and Chief Executive Scott Brockman, confirms this announcement by stating that, “now it’s not by aircraft size; it’s based on prioritization of what we’re trying to accomplish. The plan is flexible enough for us to make it work for all different kinds of situations.”

The new incentive program was created with the hopes of attracting more airlines to the Memphis airport, in the wake of Delta completely getting rid of its Memphis hub. With more airlines and more destinations, Memphis movers are hopeful that this will help more people move to Memphis who are moving from across the country or intrastate, and could benefit from flying during their moving process, rather than driving.

The incentive program is not the only new addition to the airport; the airport has also reached an operating agreement with the ride-sharing service, Lyft.

According to Brockman, “Our goal has been to find a solution that allowed companies such as Lyft to operate at (Memphis International). This agreement not only does that, but also ensures a level playing field with existing commercial services. We are excited that our passengers will now have more transportation options.”

The city of Knoxville is about to have a new claim to fame – they are now home of the Knoxville Honeysuckle Saison.

Making its grand debut to the community at the upcoming Knoxville Brewfest, this new brew comes from the hands of nine local craft brewers; including: Woodruff’s Brewing Co., Schultz Brau Brewery, Saw Works Brewing Co., Pretentious Beer & Glassware Co., Hexagon Brewing Co., Crafty Bastard Brewery, Blackhorse Brewery, Balter Beerworks and Alliance Brewing Co.

One employee of Knox Brew Tours, Zack Roskop, explains that, “Knoxville is between Nashville and Asheville, two really great beer cities, but we’re on our way to competing with them. What a great way to help raise awareness of what’s coming down the pipeline.” Knoxville movers know that this is something for beer-loving, incoming residents to get excited about.

The idea to create a brew unique to Knoxville, came when Roskop initially asked a friend to help him make a beer that he could serve at this upcoming beer fest. To his surprise, not only did his friend agree to help, but multiple others stepped forward who were willing to put in their two-cents. When this happened, Roskop initially thought “let’s find a way to take the opportunity to elevate the beer community and bring the breweries together.”

This new Knoxville brew ultimately turned into a way to bring the breweries closer, and ended up creating the recipe for the new Knoxville Honeysuckle Saison.

Roskop assures that “no individual or business is making money off this beer. One hundred percent of the ingredients were donated. They donated their time. To have 10 businesses come together to elevate their exposure and the city as a whole for free, blows my mind.”

Regarding a Kansas City bill aimed at raising taxes that are geared towards closing the gap on a budget deficit, House members are expected to vote it down.

The session regarding the final vote on the bill ended earlier this month, a move often used in order to buy extra time for House leaders to sway the opinions of those who are not yet convinced towards the direction of their vote. The bill not only increases sales and cigarette taxes, but also adds a tax increase for business owners. If you are a small business owner who is moving to Kansas City, local movers want you to be aware of the potential policy changes and stay on top of the business tax motions and changes.

The Kansas City government does not allow the state to have a deficit, which explains the need for the tax increases.

Commenting on the $15.4 billion budget already set in place, House Majority Leader Jene Vickrey shared that, “none of us, I think, comprehend at this moment what is going to happen to our citizens,” potentially hindering residents in the area and those who were looking to move to Kansas.

The main argument against raising the taxes was attributed to the fact that over 330,000 Kansas business owners had profits that were exempt under a separate policy created by Governor Brownback. In fact, the governor went on the record and stated that he would immediately veto any plan that included an increase of more than $24 million.

If the bill does make it past the Kansas City House of Representatives and into daily life, then the sales tax would ultimately increase from 6.15% to 6.55% and the cigarette tax would increase a total of 50 cents a pack, totaling $1.29 per pack.

Those mainly affected are the middle-class families in the Kansas City community if the bill does end up being passed, something that Kansas City movers are not entirely thrilled about. Currently, the debate over the bill continues on within the Kansas House.

The taxpayers have spoken and they want downtown water taxis in Jacksonville.

It only makes sense that a city on the water would vie for a public means of transportation by boat. While the Jacksonville water taxis offer residents and tourists a unique take on the city, it has not been enough revenue in recent years to keep the company afloat.

In order to keep from going under water, Lakeshore Marine Services, the company that runs the taxis, has announced that it is looking for multiple public partnerships that will allow it to keep operating in the city of Jacksonville. So far, the Florida Times Union and the Jacksonville Jaguars have become “founding partners” and will donate money each year in order to help save the water taxis.

While this is a strong start towards keeping the tradition alive, much more funding is needed if Jacksonville plans on keeping the water taxis as a staple of the city. While taxpayers have made it known that they do not want the water taxis to go anywhere, their recent track record of actually utilizing the alternative means of transportation says otherwise.

Specifically, the company shared that the amount of riders aboard the taxi had significantly decreased since the start of the company on the water. In fact, the taxis had drawn half the amount of riders this year as it had years prior.

As a means of attracting more riders to the water taxis, the option of incorporating sunset cruises into the water taxi schedule has been pitched by the local community. While your local Jacksonville movers and the rest of the community certainly do not want to lose the water taxis, much more funding will be needed in order to keep them afloat.
