  • Caring for a home can be very different than an apartment. So, if you are moving to West Palm Beach from an apartment, there are some crucial things that you should invest in now to save you time and money in the long run. Check out this list from local West Palm moving company All My Sons, to get you prepared for things you’ll need moving from an apartment to a home.

    1. Appliances – Not all homes come with them, but we all need them. If you have never purchased an appliance such as a fridge or washer and dryer before, make sure you do your research. You want to buy appliances that are highly-rated by consumers and come with a warranty. Also, if you can’t purchase an appliance in full, look into buying from a store that offers financing at a low percentage until a certain time.
    2. Tools – You need to be prepared to fix things in your new West Palm Beach home because there is no longer a land lord to report to. The essentials include: hammer, nails, drill, different-sized drill bits, measuring tape, a rake, wheel barrel, retractable utility knife, a wrench, pliers, and multi-tip screw driver.
    3. Safety equipment – Invest in a fire extinguisher to keep under the sink in the kitchen. Make sure all of your smoke alarms work and that you have equipment that detects carbon monoxide. You may also want to look into getting an alarm system to reinforce safety.
    4. Lawn equipment – If you are responsible for your own lawn and are planning on maintaining it yourself, look into buying a lawn mower, edger, hose, gardening tools and eventually a sprinkler system.

If you were planning on moving to Columbus to work at the famous Columbus Dispatch in town, think again.

Columbus movers recently discovered that Mike Reed, CEO of Dispatch buyers New Media Investment Group Inc. briefed employees at the Columbus Dispatch earlier this month, on the potential cuts that they would be doing to jobs. Although it is not certain if or when there will be layoffs, the staff at the Columbus Dispatch should know in roughly six months (year’s end) whether or not they will occur and to what extent.

Reed’s meeting with staffers at the Dispatch lasted close to 45 minutes and, although he let staffers know what was up in the air, there were many questions surrounding the layoffs and what would happen to the newspaper as a result. It is also a deterrent for writers and reporters moving to Columbus, if local journalism is on the decline or there are not enough outlets and money to support the field.

Reed assured fellow staff that his company will aim to make cuts that will not have a large effect on the quality of journalism the Dispatch produces. According to sources, New Media and its subsidiary GateHouse Media are well-known for buying newspapers and then making job cuts, slimming down departments. The Columbus Dispatch will supposedly be undergoing staff evaluations immediately.

On a positive note, New Media likes the idea of Columbus Monthly and Capital Style magazine – the monthly publications that Reed told Columbus Dispatch employees could be replicated in other cities, creating jobs elsewhere, hopefully still moving new writers into the Columbus area.

School is finally out, and that means that local kids of all ages across Atlanta are participating in sports and summer programs. One sport in particular that is popular during summer, is baseball. For the first time in the history of the United States, there is going to be a national girl’s baseball tournament. Baseball – not softball.

The girl’s baseball tournament is being held by Baseball for All and will feature about a dozen teams from across the nation, one of which Atlanta movers are proud to say is from Metro Atlanta.

Eleven girls from the Atlanta area, between the ages of 10 and 13, formed the team known as the Georgia Peaches just a short two months ago. Many of the girls on the team formerly played t-ball, but most young girls typically move to playing softball around the age of 13, in order to play in national tournaments; since until now, that was the only option.

“Baseball is fun, more fun than softball. I am really excited to play on a team with all girls,” said 11-year-old Emma Tucker.

“I know girls can play baseball, and do anything just as good as boys,” said 10-year-old Gabi Yulo. “I think being on this team shows everyone what girls can do.”

If you are moving to Atlanta and you have a daughter who loves baseball, local Atlanta moving companies encourage new residents to get involved in the local girl’s baseball teams, so that we can continue to have an all-girls team participate in the new national tournament. We also hope that families will continue to move into the area for the many sports’ opportunities in Metro Atlanta.

Even under the best circumstances, moving can be extremely stressful and exhausting. It is always nerve-racking when you are moving your entire life in a truck, and earlier this month, 27-year-old Amber Schonhoft had the worst thing that could happen during the moving process, happen during her move to Denver.

Schonhoft was moving to Denver from Indianapolis and her U-Haul trailer was stolen. The trailer contained all of her belongings, which is estimated to be worth roughly $15,000 and included furniture, electronics, and various valuables.

“It hurts. You feel violated, people shouldn’t feel that way,” Schonhoft said.

Trying to make the best out of a horrible moving experience, Schonhoft’s friends and family are giving her clothes and her new roommate in Denver is trying to help as well. Her family has even started a Go Fund Me campaign, which can be found here.

Denver movers, in cooperation with the Better Business Bureau, urge anyone who is moving in or out of Denver, to do their research before hiring a moving company. Also, even if you think you can handle driving a rented moving truck, in order to potentially avoid theft, hiring a full service moving company could help you avoid a moving mishap like Schonhoft experienced.

If you have had a previous roach or bug infestation problem in your home, make sure you follow the following steps to ensure that you experience a bug free move to Tulsa. It is safe to say that you probably don’t want any unsuspected visitors coming into your new home and making your move to Tulsa unpleasant.

    1. Wash all clothes before packing them- clothes that have sat in drawers for a long period time are places that can easily hide bugs. If you don’t have time to wash everything, make sure you are inspecting each piece of clothing before putting it in a moving box.
    2. Inspect all furniture – If a piece of furniture has cushions, make sure you remove them and check all angles. Bugs are likely to seek refuge in tight spaces like the cushion cracks of a couch.
    3. Carefully look over appliances – Roaches and bugs alike, hide out in electronics and appliances that can’t be opened. It’s probably best you get rid of such items before you move to Tulsa.
    4. Leave behind any plants that lived indoors- If you have previously experienced a roach or bug infestation, leave potted indoor plants in the past. Bugs hide in warm dirt and may reappear in your new Tulsa home.
    5. Use new moving boxes from your Tulsa moving company – New boxes are easy to inspect and will not be infected with anything. They also signify a clean, fresh start before you even move out of your old home.

Fraud by moving companies happens every day, and the government is finally intervening. Call 12 for Action gets hundreds to thousands of complaints from consumers this time of year, regarding fraudulent moving companies. The summer months of May, June, and even July are the most popular time, each year, to move. Why? Most families move during the summer because the weather permits, as it is not likely to be snowing anywhere, and their children are on summer break. Moving during the summer seems to be perfect because families can get settled in and acquainted with their new city, before the next school year starts. However, this also means that moving companies are bombarded with having to complete multiple moves a day, for an entire three months – and there are things that are bound to go wrong.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration received nearly 6,000 complaints about moving companies in the past two years, and this does not include the amount of complaints that the Better Business Bureau receives.

Two of the worst case scenarios that people submitted complaints about were: having missing (potentially stolen) items, and having the moving crew refuse to open the truck at their new residence until they paid them more money. Baton Rouge movers want people to know that it is important in this case, to know your rights. If your mover refuses to release your belongings, you need to make sure that you have the written quote in hand and, not give them more money, but know the appropriate course of action for obtaining your belongings and having the moving company properly reprimanded.

In order to combat the issue, the FMCSA is launching a new campaign called “Protect Your Move” to equip consumers will all of the necessary information and tips for the moving process and finding the right mover. Before you hire a mover, do your research, read their reviews, and even ask around for a recommendation from friends. Check their licenses and credentials online, get movers insurance, get everything in writing, and be sure to stay updated on FMCSA news.

Thanks to one Sarasota couple, Neil and Shirley McArthur, those who are homeless in Sarasota can still have a fantastic Fourth of July. The McArthur’s will be hosting their annual Fourth of July Jubilee this coming Saturday, at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Newtown. If you have recently relocated to Sarasota, be sure to check out the Fourth of July Jubilee.

The couple started throwing an annual Fourth of July party for the entire Sarasota community, even those who are homeless. The idea came from the couple’s desire to share love and encouragement throughout the community, no matter what the individual’s current situation in life. At their event, they typically offer baked beans, chicken, ribs, potato salad and freshly sliced watermelons.

The food is a most anticipated part of the event, as Neil McArthur shares that, “If I’m going to serve these people, I want them to have something I would eat.”

In addition to simply serving food, the Sarasota Fourth of July party also has volleyball games, horseshoes and sack races.

Despite Shirley McArthur sharing that, “we definitely don’t have much funds,” oftentimes, the couple ends up paying for the event themselves. Neil McArthur simply wants to offer the local Sarasota community “words of encouragement” and to “let them know they’re still loved.” Since the couple could use some assistance in their initiative, Sarasota movers and close friends and family to the couple, urge residents to aid in any way they can.

The annual Fourth of July Jubilee feeds about 300 to 400 people, and while anyone from the Sarasota community is invited, the event usually hosts those who find themselves in hard times. For those who are new to the neighborhood, the McArthur’s are gladly accepting food donations in order to help make the Jubilee as successful as possible. So, after your local Sarasota movers help get you settled into your new home, head on over to the Fourth of July Jubilee and see what the party is all about!

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City has recently shifted its focus towards supporting the careers and creative development of local artists from smaller Utah communities throughout the state.

One of the main catalysts for the refocus is the museum’s executive director, Kristian Anderson. Speaking on how he strongly believes that supporting the creation of contemporary art can have a positive impact within any community, he specifically focuses on a small mining town by the name of Helper. The town once used to be prosperous, but is now noting how local artists are helping reshape the town’s image. Salt Lake City movers hope that the increase of local art and showcase of local artists helps make the city more appealing for home buyers who are looking to move near the area, as it will serve as a sort of beautification of the city.

Anderson states that, “it’s easy for us to sometimes stay within our own bubble (in the valley). I’m really excited about what’s going on in places like, say, Helper. Art is helping revitalize that town.”

Curator of Exhibitions at UMOCA, Rebecca Maksym, emphasizes the importance of supporting local artists and giving them a platform to contribute to the larger arts community. Since contemporary art can affect the landscape of the community by shaping, adapting, and presenting ideas that are current going on.

Maksym states that, “one of our biggest goals is to put Salt Lake City into the global arts scene. But that effort starts by supporting artists that are working right here at home.”

Now that the museum is focusing on adding more local Utah artists to its exhibition roster, everyone from Salt Lake City locals to tourists will be filling up the venue in order to support the cause. For those relocating to the city, the UMOCA is a great place to take the family while your local Salt Lake City movers unpack all your belongings in your new home. Plus, it may even inspire you and your family to create some art of your own!

Moving to Raleigh and don’t know what to do for this upcoming Fourth of July? Well, whether or not you are new to the area or are just looking to branch out, your local Raleigh movers have a list of some of the best things to do in Raleigh this upcoming holiday.

For the whole family, check out the fireworks display at Raleigh’s The ‘Works! Celebration at noon on Saturday, July 4. The event will have live music, rides for the kids, and a beer and wine tent. Finish the day off with fireworks at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts at 9:30 p.m.

If you are looking for something slightly different to explore while your Raleigh moving company is moving you into your new home, then the Capitol Concert is a great alternative to the typical Fourth of July show. Take your family and experience a patriotic concert that features the Raleigh Concert Band – a nonprofit that gives adult musicians a chance to perform within the community.

Looking to wear your red, white, and blue while learning something at the same time? Then the History House in Raleigh is the perfect option for you and your family! Expect to be greeted by costumed guides upon first arriving at the house, who will then take you on a tour of colonial life, with pit-stops at stations to complete old-fashioned crafts and games.

Regardless of which event you choose to attend, you and your family will have a blast taking a break from moving and watching the Fourth of July fireworks in Raleigh.
