  • This past Saturday, as storms takeover Kansas City, the home of yet another family was flooded in an ongoing ambush of heavy rain that has been going on throughout the month.

Unfortunately, many of the families who live in the area were ill-prepared to handle the excessive amount of flooding that came their way, mainly due to being misinformed as to exactly how much rain they should expect.

For example, when one local family, the Laudie’s, first made the decision to move to Kansas City, they were told that the ranch home they owned only flooded once every 10 years – which would only mean a minimum of a foot or two that would be near their basement. However, after this past week they would quickly learn that that was not the case.

It was due to this previous information that the homeowners were not too worried when a neighbor called to let them know that the river was rising because of oncoming rains. However, the Laudie’s quickly realized that the rain would not be stopping anytime soon.

Because of this, Steve Laudie states that, “we decided to pull stuff from the basement up to the main floor. It kept rising and rising.” However, it turns out that those preventative measures were not enough, considering that rescuers had to come and rescue the family, along with 190 other people as storms kept on hitting the Kansas City area – complete with about five tornadoes.

Roughly 35 houses had water inside of them. Luckily, no injuries were reported from the onslaught of rain that hit the city that day – so much rain that the river ended up cresting at over 30 feet.

The Denver community has a reason to celebrate – the Western Sugar Cooperative has decided to expand the amount of plants that they have, which will create more jobs.

Cutting down on the amount of plants that they currently have in Wyoming, the Denver-based company has announced plans to greatly increase the amount of production capacity in its home state of Colorado. Currently, the Sugar Cooperative has 1,000 growers throughout Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Montana – so while it is not the best news for the economy of the other states, it will do wonders for the working environment in Denver.

Not only that, but a recent improvement in more advanced technology and a better quality of technology will help cut down on the amount of energy used tremendously. They can do all of this without having to sacrifice the overall amount of sugar produced.

Co-op director of shareholder relations and governmental affairs, Kent Wimmer, confirmed that there would be no more growth regarding the Nebraska plants. However, the Wyoming plants stand to lose up to 70 positions, which means that there will only be a mere six plants left in the state. They plan on making the position reductions after sugar production is completed next year.

The announcement of the increase in plants to Denver will not only provide more jobs to the community, but it will also mean that an influx of new grower-owners will be packing and moving to Denver.

If you are new to Tulsa, you should know that this town loves its beer, and Marshall Brewing Company is proof. The Tulsa-based brewing company has been around for decades and has grown increasingly popular in recent years. To answer the craft beer demand in Tulsa, Marshall Brewing Company created Arrowhead Pale Ale. This seasonal ale is only available during the summer months, so if you are new to town, now is the time to try this much-anticipated beverage! Your Tulsa movers know you will be glad you did!

Arrowhead Pale Ale is typically available from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and will hit liquor stores and bars across Tulsa on Thursday, May 21st. If you have not tried the popular brew yet, it is a light pale ale with a hoppy flavor that includes a hint of citrus, and is 5.2 percent alcohol. To celebrate the release of the summer ale, Marshall Brewing Company is throwing an official launch party on May 29, at James E. McNellie’s South City, a popular Tulsa public house.

Arrowhead Pale Ale will replace Marshall’s spring brew, Revival Red Ale. It will be replaced by the brewing company’s Oktoberfest Lager in late August or early September. Make sure to try this seasonal favorite. It is really popular with the locals, and for good reason! It will be the perfect complement to all of the barbecue you grill up this summer. Buy a few six-packs and invite the neighbors for a good time, Tulsa-style!

Moving away to attend college is an incredible and memorable milestone in life. Being away from home for the first time can be scary and fun at the same time. There is so much freedom to do things you’ve never done and enjoy a city you’ve never lived in before, but it can often be double edged. If you didn’t learn to discipline yourself in high school, you might figure out the hard way that you need a good amount of discipline to make it in the real world. If you are moving to Raleigh to go to college, here are some tips.

Being away from mom and dad for the first time means numerous things. Pro: no bedtime. Con: no bedtime. While it might seem great that you get to set your own sleeping schedule, you’ll soon realize that going to bed early is a gift. College students are notoriously sleep deprived and you will miss the days of going to bed at 9 p.m., and revel the rare nights you get to sleep at a decent hour. Another luxury you will no longer have: mom and dad dragging you out of bed to get to class – and in college, skipping class will only hinder your gpa and make it difficult to graduate on time.

Another aspect of moving out of your parents’ house means you don’t have to ask permission to go places. Pro: no permission. Con: no checks or balances. Most parents tell their kids “no” because they have their kid’s best interest in mind, and they want their kids to live a balanced life. In college, you can go anywhere you want, whenever you want. It’s all fun and games until you have too many absences in your class to get an A and you have to explain to your parents that you overslept half the semester because your roommate just wouldn’t let you skip that party to study. Choose wisely.

In a time when conspiracy theories run rampant through the U.S., one might be skeptical to believe everything they hear about the government. The idea of the government coming in and taking over a part of your town, building up a city, and running a completely secret operation right under your nose is seen as crazy, and most people frown upon those who believe this is happening. However for the people of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, this was a reality for a great number of years.

In 1942, the federal government decided to move to Oak Ridge, Tennessee and make it the hub until 1946. In these short four years, the government came in, used eminent domain to take peoples’ land, and built up an entire city; including: schools, homes, movie theaters, and anything you could imagine. The Manhattan Project had begun. Hordes of military families moved to Oak Ridge, bringing the population from just 3,000 to 75,000. While these families were working in top secret conditions, they had no idea what they were really doing. It wasn’t until news of the first atomic bomb that was dropped on Japan in August of 1945, that the people of Oak Ridge knew what they had been working on.

It’s incredible to think that an entire town can be built, side-by-side with the most dangerous weapon in the world, just a few miles away from the major U.S. city of Knoxville, without any outsider’s knowledge. If you are looking to move to Knoxville, but want to live in a quainter, outer-lying town, Oak Ridge movers are happy to help move you in to our historical city.

Columbus city council recently approved a $16.5 Million road project that will add relief to one of Columbus’ most congested roadways – the Northwest side. The project will widen Hard Road from two to five lanes, with new pavement, curbs, sidewalks, and additional lighting.

The project is phase three of a three-part effort by the city, in which they have already widened certain areas of Hard Road, east of Smokey Row Road to Route 315.

The widening of Hard Road will dramatically decrease congestion and traffic.

Residents are not thrilled about the construction, but they are thrilled about what the end product means for the Columbus area. However, some residents who live next to the congested road are not very happy about the improvement, saying that the construction equipment has been parked on their property.

“Wondering why they couldn’t park it along the road along the easement that they have and not in our backyard,” said local resident Colleen Leffel, whose backyard butts up along Hard Road. She also explained how she is losing that additional space that was between her backyard and the highly trafficked road – something she is concerned about.

Moreover, if you are moving to Columbus, you will soon be able to enjoy an easier, more timely commute and even errand run.

The Baton Rouge Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (BRCVPA) is an A-rated, arts-focused Baton Rouge magnet school – and the parents of attending students are getting angry.

In January, a new principal was appointed to the magnet school – Myra Jordan. The issues that concerned parents are having, stem from the fact that BRCVPA is an A-rated school, and Jordan comes from an F-rated school (Howell Park Elementary). But the appointment of Jordan as the new principal, was not the only issue that parents had. Last year, a proposal was up in the air, that proposed cutting the school’s visual arts teacher position – but it is a visual arts school. Jordan’s appointment only added fuel to the fire.

Now, parents feel as if they are not being heard, even more that they are being silenced. The latest battle the parents are fighting, is for control of the school’s parent-teacher organization.

According to The Advocate, “Each year, the PTO holds end-of-the-school-year elections for three of its four officers. Unlike past elections, this year’s will be competitive, with three parents seeking to unseat the current PTO leadership, which has expressed public support for the new principal. For weeks, though, it wasn’t clear if elections would occur at all. On April 14, without explanation, Jordan canceled “until further notice” all scheduled meetings with parents for the rest of the school year. That included the May PTO meeting where officer elections had been scheduled.”

If you are moving to Baton Rouge and aim for your student to attend this A-rated school, Baton Rouge movers suggest joining the motion to get parents’ voices heard!

Moving to any new place requires a large amount of paperwork. Memphis is no exception to that. Along with the usual – officially changing your address and having your utilities set up before you get into town, there are a few extra things that you might want to think about before you move to Memphis.

If you have any pets, Memphis requires that they are licensed and vaccinated for rabies. This is pretty standard, as most places do not want animals in their area that haven’t been vaccinated. There are two locations where you can get the documents you need: the Humane Society of Memphis and Memphis Animal Services.

Along with getting your dog licensed and vaccinated, there are some taxes that are specific to Memphis that you might want to know about. The state sales tax for Tennessee is 7% and Shelby County where Memphis is located has a 2.25% sales tax. Your property taxes will depend on where you live, so be sure to check out the Memphis Chamber’s website for a quick overview and links to websites that can help you.

The Memphis Chamber also offers a relocation guide that gives information about Memphis and its surrounding areas. For just $8 you can have information about schools, housing, local companies, financial and medical institutions, among much more.

If you are looking to move to Memphis in the near future, remember to plan ahead and think about all of the clerical work that goes into moving.

This past week, a supermarket closing has your local Jacksonville movers, along with the rest of the residents of the community, shocked over the recent announcement.

The store met its untimely closing when the police were called to the store in order to investigate other charges from Ameer Issa, who had gone to the store and made several charges with unauthorized purchases using EBT cards.

While the initial felony committed by Issa is what drew the police to the store, while they were there they ended up discovering major problems with the quality of the food inside the store. Specifically, it was uncovered that the way the raw meat were being handled was not at all proper, or in a way that was fit to sell to customers.

While state agencies have begun investigating the supermarket, most people are shocked by the closing of Lawtey Supermarket because it is the only supermarket in the town. Locals have mused that they “thought it was a robbery actually. We don’t get much excitement here in Lawtey.”

Once the agencies began investigating further, they discovered that the supermarket was using expired meat and repackaging it with new dates added to the package.

Mike Starling, a frequent customer of the store commented on the findings, expressing that, “when it first happened, the employees were talking about all kinds of stuff. Homeland Security, this, that and the other. So I didn’t really know, but to hear all of that, it’s very gross.”

Apparently, the discovery of the mishandling of the meat in the supermarket came as a shock to the new owners of the Lawtey Supermarket. The owners had just bought it two weeks prior to the incident occurring, and stated that they were currently trying to figure out what how to overcome this unforeseen obstacle.
