    Over the past few years, the state of Florida has been a reliable part of the high foreclosure lists when examining foreclosure filings throughout the US. Along with Nevada, Florida has remained a market that has had trouble bouncing back from the housing crisis. In fact, Florida had the nation’s highest foreclosure rate in July for the 10th consecutive month, with one in 469 homes in some stage of the process.

    Despite that top position for foreclosures, the amount of foreclosures within Florida is dropping. The same month actually showed 30 percent less foreclosures and marked the 12th straight month for foreclosure filing decreases. Also, many of the foreclosures under process currently are residual from case logs that haven’t been cleared and date back to 2004 through 2008. The county had 363 new cases filed in July, down 3 percent from a year ago, according to the RealtyTrac listing firm.

    While the road is still long for Florida’s total recovery, the demand for housing and the influx of people moving to West Palm Beach are still strong factors that help the Palm Beach county market thrive. Nearby cities like Boca Raton and Delray Beach are also high on demand and relatively low on available supply.

    Overall, the signs are pointing in the right direction for the recovery of Palm Beach County.     As the desire to live in big cities throughout the US grows, the cost of renting an apartment has been climbing in a number of midsize cities as well, squeezing residents who are paying a larger percentage of their income to rent.     Recently, we discussed the origin of the moving industry in America. While the text is helpful, the New York Times happened to create a very helpful graphic to go along with it.

    In looking at the graphic, it’s fun to note the fact that Western states have always had the lowest percentage of native born residents because they were settled later on average among other reasons.     It’s a seldom known fact that the moving industry is an American notion. While people have moved long distances since before the dawn of civilization, the historical norm was either self-moving or using general labor servants take care of the move.

    With the westward expansion and settlement, goods were transported in covered wagons in tremendous numbers. This all changed in the mid-1800s as the railroad became the dominant form of transportation. With the rail system in place, people could relocate with professionals transporting their furniture cheaper and faster than moving it themselves via wagon, with the added bonus of a far lower mortality rate.

    These early movers used barrels rather than boxes and inadequate protection for furniture if anything, much like many self-movers or less reputable companies today. The trip started like moves of the past, with items loaded on wagons. The wagons would deliver to the mover’s warehouse and be stored there till the train was ready to leave.

    Military shipments via railway in the conflicts of the 1900s increases costs for rail shipping at the time, and the creation of the interstate highway system made interstate travel by car or truck far more simple and affordable. With those economic factors, the industry’s transition from rail to truck inevitably led us to where we are today.

    According to a new survey, it seems the people living in Memphis are growing tired of a social media based world. While the data isn’t astronomical, it does show a shift in the way that the people of Memphis engage on social media sites. That trend was consistent when the survey asked the same question about visiting social media sites. Fifty percent say they visit a social media site “more than a few times a day.” But that also is a decrease from the previous year’s survey when 60 percent said they visit social media multiple times a day.

    Most social media sites saw overall declines in the survey as well. The big winner was Facebook, which saw a 4 percent point increase in participation in the new survey, growing from 90 percent participation in 2013 to 94 percent in 2014. Photo-sharing site Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, was the other winner, growing from 48 percent participation in 2013 to 55 percent in 2014.
    Ironically, despite the drop in social media usage, the amount of people claiming addiction to their smart phones was up, and almost half of the survey respondents rated their level of addiction at a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.
