The monumentally massive Cyclorama painting will be relocating from its Grant Park home, to the Atlanta History Center, as per discussions that date back to July of 2014. Cyclorama will soon be located adjacent to Zoo Atlanta, in a new structure that will be built on the Buckhead campus of the history center. The move is said to draw extra attention and crowds to Zoo Atlanta, so if you are moving to the area, you can visit the large painting, while taking a trip to see your favorite wildlife.

Moving Cyclorama came as just part of a multimillion dollar deal to expand upon the Zoo. Zoo Atlanta recently announced that they will be receiving up to a $20 million matching gift from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, in order to build a “grand new view”, turning the former home of the Cyclorama, into a special events center. The construction of the new special events center will reshape the entrance of Zoo Atlanta, and redesign the African savanna exhibit. However, if Zoo Atlanta will only receive a “matching” amount, so they must raise as much money as possible for the rebuild.

“It’s only as powerful as the gifts that come along to match it,” said Zoo Atlanta president and CEO Raymond King. “If we only raise $2 million, then it’s only a $2 million grant.”

Raising the money for the “grand new view” may prove to be difficult, since the Zoo just finished a $23 million project – the largest in its history – to build a new reptile and amphibian center; which is set to open sometime next year.

If you are moving to Atlanta this year, Zoo Atlanta is going to be the hottest family attraction come the year’s end, if all projects are passed and completed.

Earlier in the year, there was a cow named Dudley that narrowly escaped death. He was set to be slaughtered, but an issue with his foot spared his life, and The Gentle Barn swooped in and rescued him.

The Gentle Barn is an organization that rescues animals, along with working with children that have special needs. Through rescuing animals that are suffering and helping children with disabilities, both find a safe haven in The Gentle Barn.

The main location of The Gentle Barn is in Santa Clarita, California. When the owners heard Dudley’s story, they had to intervene. A young calf who lost his foot at his factory farming home, was the perfect candidate for The Gentle Barn mascot. Things were about to get a whole lot better for Dudley.

Dudley was from a factory farm in Tennessee, which is quite far from The Gentle Barn in California. The owners did everything they could and now they are opening another Gentle Barn location in Knoxville. Not only was Dudley’s life saved, he now has a safe home where he is out of harm’s way, he also got a prosthetic leg.

It is the dream of The Gentle Barn owners to open locations across the country, and to spread their healing for all animals in need. Now, not only do they have a second location for their organization, but Dudley the cow gets to live a happy, healthy life helping kids. For the past 26 years, elementary, middle, and high school students try to come up with ways that they can drop an egg 100 feet off of the ground and not have it crack. In Birmingham, this is known as the Annual Brent Newman Memorial Egg Drop Contest, sponsored by the UAB Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Engineering.

As part of the contest, students have to design containers or apparatuses that can hold a raw egg and keep it from breaking, after they release it from the top of the Vulcan statue (which is roughly 105 feet tall). The contest aims to engage young students to think creatively and hopefully go into the field of engineering in the future.

This year was the 26^th annual egg drop and the schools that participated were: Creek View Elementary, Isabella School, Gadsden Middle School, and Oak Mountain High School. Over 400 students participated this year.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Libraries rake in $40.7 million in taxes each year, while New Orleans only brings in $9.5 million. What is even odder, is that both areas have the same number of libraries – 14. In order to understand why this has happened, we take to the numbers to explain it for us.

Current property taxes in Baton Rouge (of which goes to libraries) is $134.75 per household (roughly). In New Orleans, homeowners currently pay less than $65 a year in taxes towards their public libraries. As a result, New Orleans libraries were going through some major cutbacks in terms of operating hours and services offered. Meanwhile, the thriving Baton Rouge library system was adding new libraries and renovating older ones.

In order to assuage the issue in New Orleans, earlier this month, a property tax hike was proposed and passed for libraries in New Orleans, after supporting voters voted in favor. The tax hike will raise New Orleans residents with $200,000 homes that take homestead exemption taxes to $71.71 a year for library taxes. The expected generated revenue for New Orleans’ libraries will now increase from $9.5 million to $17.75 million. Despite the good news that this brings, there are many officials on the Metro Council who are angry at the Library Board for this push.

All Aboard Florida has made its way to West Palm Beach. All Aboard Florida is a passenger train that connects Miami to Orlando, with stops throughout cities along the way. The West Palm Beach station is going to connect various parts of the city, along with connecting the city with other cities. It has not been built yet, but plans are underway to begin construction for this express train. It is expected to be up and running by October 2016. If this passenger train becomes intricate enough, it could mean that people moving to West Palm Beach wouldn’t need to invest in cars. America is not doing too well in terms of infrastructure, relative to other countries, so this might be a step in the right direction to keep up.

A program aimed at keeping local kids out of trouble, has announced that it will be returning this upcoming summer to the Jacksonville community.

Not only is the Rec ‘N Roll completely free, but it will also help out the parents who are not able to take time off of work to watch their kids. Coaches will be in city parks offering guidance and supervision to kids, much like they were last year when the program first started.

When Rec ‘N Roll first started last year, it went on for eight weeks at 10 different parks throughout the Jacksonville area. Most of the parks were in areas with a high-crime rate and by the end of the summer program, crime had declined significantly.

According to Jacksonville mayor, Alvin Brown, “having the opportunity to invest in programs that would target at-risk youth, to ensure that they’re not getting into gangs or participating in criminal activity, I think that’s important.”

Moving forward with this upcoming summer, Rec ‘N Roll will grow from 10 to 18 parks around the city – seven of which are located in the Operation Ceasefire zone. One of the major funders for the program is attorney Steve Pajcic, who donated an upwards of $50,000 in order to help pay for the program.

The program this summer will run from June 15 until August 7, and this year they have included some additions to the agenda. Along with the normal itinerary, the mayor also announced that the Department of Justice would be adding a team to work on helping reduce Jacksonville youth crime.
