This past Saturday, September 24th, your local relocation professionals here weren’t the only Seattle locals out moving! As a matter of fact, thousands of Seattle residents could be seen “Moving Planet Seattle,” or at least attending the event by the same name. The Moving Planet Seattle event hosted several workshops and activities all aimed at expediting the planet’s departure from fossil fuel dependency. Residents arrived traveling by bike, foot, and public transit including Seattle’s mayor, Mike McGinn who rode a bicycle to Saturday’s event.
Mayor McGinn was one of several guest speakers who attended the Moving Planet Seattle event. Among other topics discussed, he spoke of plans to make public transportation as well as travel by bike or foot much easier by constructing more “mixed-use” neighborhoods. There was also talk of future plans to rid Washington of all its coal plants as well as the very need for coal and fossil fuels altogether. Currently, coal from nearby plants is being regularly moved to a coal port which is regularly exported to China to be utilized. Washington’s role in coal exporting will be short lived, however, as most Washington cities have already completely discontinued the use of coal as a power source –Seattle included.
